WHAT: Family Kayak Nature Tours "Where stress dissolves, your sense of wonder returns and your smile is genuine".
WHEN: Sunday Afternoons. These are 2-1/2 hour kayak tours starting May 24 through the end of the summer. Weather and conditions will determine the time of afternoon. Most will be leaving 2:00pm or later. As the weather warms up they will leave later, like 3:00 or 4:00pm. I can offer sunset tours or full moon tours if anyone is interested.
WHY: Because we love to be outdoors, we love to kayak and we have a chance to share this with others. So turn off the tv, log off facebook, twitter, etc and be still and explore the glory of what God created.
WHO IS DOING THIS: Pam and Matt Landrum, owners of The Outdoors Inn & Outfitters and Kayak Outer Banks
HOW MUCH: No charge. Free.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: These tours are open to all Nags Head Church goers and their friends and friends of youth members. Anyone from age 4 and up. It's more a question of mindset. Can your child sit in a kayak for 2 hours? Can you?
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE? No. We can show you what you need to know for these tours in about 10 minutes.
DO I NEED TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE? No, but you do need to be reasonably fit. Ask yourself these questions; can I move my arms with relative ease? Can I sit on a low beach chair with my legs out in front of me? Can I bend my knees? Can I swim? Can I float when wearing a PFD (personal flotation device)? If you answered yes to these questions then you should be able to kayak.
WILL I GET WET? Maybe some drips in your lap. The boats do not usually tip over. We use very stable kayaks without skirts on them, so you will not be closed in. If the kayak does tip (extremely rare) you will just fall out. Since we tend to go in relatively shallow water you should be able to stand up.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING? A sense of adventure, sunscreen, hat, water to drink in a recloseable container (we don't recommend sodas since they make you thirsty), snacks for kids and adults as needed, a camera (in a ziplock baggie or water proof bag. We have waterproof bags available to borrow).
WHAT DO I WEAR? Clothes and shoes you don't mind getting wet possibly. Water shoes or tennis shoes (we do not recommend flip flops since they tend to come off in the water), sunscreen, hat, sunglasses.
HOW MANY CAN GO? 15 people. We have 4 double kayaks and 7 single kayaks available. We also need at least 5 signed up to run a tour.
WHERE DO WE GO? Depending on the wind direction and weather we can/will run tours in Pea Island NWR, Alligator River NWR, Kitty Hawk Woods Maritime Forest, Roanoke Island area, Oregon Inlet Marina area (NOT near the inlet, only in the saltmarshes surrounding the marina and near Bodie Island Lighthouse. If you have a preferrence, let us know.
CAN I USE MY OWN KAYAK OR CANOE? Absolutely!
HOW DO I SIGN UP? Call Pam at (252) 473-1356 at least 3 days ahead of time.
