Sunday Feedback - August 30

A couple new songs today. "In Christ" was about all we have as our relationship with Jesus. "You are God Alone" was a declaration that in our lives He is our One and only, deserving of our worship.

Today we were back to Moses' story and the idolatry that began soon after they pledged their devotion to Yahweh.

And don't forget. The Connection Group party begins this week!

Divorce Care

Registration is currently underway for DivorceCare, a 13-session video-based program for men and women in need of divorce or separation recovery and support. The program will be held at Nags Head Church.

The first 2 sessions will be held on Saturday, September 19 from 10AM – 2PM (lunch will be provided). The weekly sessions will be held on Thursday evenings from 7PM – 9PM beginning September 24, 2009 and continuing to November 19, 2009. DivorceCare features nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery topics such as “Facing My Anger,” “Facing My Loneliness,” “Forgiveness” and “KidCare.”

Facilitators have both program and life experience related to divorce.

God's of our own making
Moses is back! This Sunday we'll talk about idolatry and why it is so easy to get into it.

F1RST Wednesday returns
This coming Wednesday night, Sept. 2 6:30 to 8PM. FW is a worship gathering for believers, and includes prayer, communion, music (Nate says we're bringing back some older songs for FW) and teaching for the church. The lobby will open at 5PM if you want to grab dinner on the way and eat it at church. Nursery and Kids worship are provided.

Picnic!
Sunday afternoon, September 6 at Rec Park in KDH. Invite a friend! The church will provide the paper products and drinks. You bring your favorite picnic foods and we'll eat and play and enjoy the day.

Patriot Day September 11 Team Needed
This will be our second year to host a lunch buffet for our Public Safety men and women on the anniversary of the World Trade Center/Pentagon attacks. "Patriot Day" is to honor those who serve in law enforcement, firefighting and emergency medical services. The lunch is provided by local restaurants. Needed are volunteers to set it all up and pack it away, as well as greeting and hosting those who come that day. If you would like to be involved, email Rick@nagsheadchurch.org asap.

New Member Interviews - Date Change
Ten attenders took Discovering NHC last Sunday and are ready to become partners! Our interviews for them will be Sunday, Sept. 13 after the 11AM Gathering and includes a great lunch provided by our Hospitality Team. Don't forget to get your application in by this Sunday.

First Appointment study guides
First Appointment (Connection Groups for Men) starts new next week. There's room for growth. If you'd like to get your study guide "Being God's Man by Resisting the World" they'll be available in the Lobby Sunday. You'll also be able to get info about First Appointment if you want to know more.

Divorce Care
Divorce Care is a network of thousands of divorce recovery support groups meeting worldwide. Our goa is to help those who are separated or divorced find help for their hurts, discover hope for their future and experience God's healing.

We will launch at 10AM on Saturday, September 19 at NHC. That day 2 sessions will be covered and lunch provided for those in attendance and wrap up at 2PM. We will then meet each Thursday night from 7 - 9 beginning Thursday, September 24 and continuing until Thursday, November 19. We do our last 2 sessions on Saturday, November 21 (10 - 2)

Our Divorce Care facilitators have both program and life experience related to divorce.

Kids Zone Painting this Week!!!

After a great turnout Saturday to get the walls primed they are now being painted. It would be awesome to get it all painted before Sunday.

IF you know your way around with a roller and brush (and that's an all caps IF - not everybody can paint) come on down and lend a hand. There's minimal cutting in to do (no doors or baseboard yet) and only one small ceiling to paint in the bathroom.

Just call Andy and let him know you're coming. The walls are color-labeled with post-it notes and the paint is ready to roll.

We start our journey back to France today.

We've had a great summer and there is much for which we can give thanks...

My parents are the best. They have done so much for us. We're so thankful that we have a home to go to when we are in the States. Thanks Mom and Dad! We are also thankful for Nags Head Church. We are blessed to be a partners with them and so encouraged by what God is doing through them. We thank God that our children have a place in the States they can call home.

We are looking forward to getting back to France.

Today Matt Glock finished up the series "Holier Than Thou?" by taking us to Isaiah 58 and showing how our holiness is intended to display God's glory to the world.

All of today's songs invited us to either live a holy life or sang of the power of Christ to bring change in us and the world God has called us to reach.

Sunday afternoon from 2 until 5 Burnie and Rick will lead a training session for all CG leaders and those who are interested in becoming leaders. It will be purposeful, practical and fun. You're welcome to bring your lunch and stay after church if that works best for you. Child care is not provided.

Clean up Friday...Paint Saturday!

Tomorrow afternoon we need some folks to come and sweep and vacuum up the dust in the Kids Zone area. If you can do that please contact Tom Lee, 202-1629.Saturday morning is Paint Day! Hooray!! If you can spread paint your help would be greatly appreciated. 8:30 to noon.

Sunday gatherings are times when God shows Himself to us in many different ways. It could be through a song, a scripture, a conversation with a fellow believer, a thought presented in the message, an act of service.

Update from Don and Mary DeHart

Dear Nags head teammates

Since I returned from Red Soul Rising Camp, we have had three trips away and three days with Mary's procedure. Energy levels are not what they once were following this summer program.

Good news. The colonoscopy reveals "nothing nasty" in the Doctor's words. He will see her in a couple of weeks to follow-up on other possible issues in her digestive system. ..colitis...he's not yet certain what. Diet mostly and getting over the sick feeling is where she is today. WE thank God for that...those were some lonely hours waiting to know. Thank y'all for covering her through this difficult time. It was the first time I have run this kind of camp without her...stretched is not even close to defining my own heart as I went into this 15 days of Red Soul Rising camp.

Red Soul Rising 2009 was beyond my expectation. God brought more than 30 individuals to volunteer local and from as far away as Chicago and Houston. The Native elders from Sachteen warmly welcomed us into their territory like we have never known. The work involved in moving the camp this far into the bush was exhausting, but the rewards were overwhelmingly encouraging.

Native and non-Native friends came to help in more ways than I can define. Feeding from 110 at every meal upwards to 150 noon and evenings in the bush was no small feat ...yet, we always had enough help and food. Family members and elders drifted in an out throughout each day hearing the chronological Bible stories the children were learning. We don't have numbers recorded as to how many people came to know Jesus...He does.

Harmony and serving were the characteristic marks of this camp like I have never experienced. Our daughters, Julie and Annababe, have been part of this camp staff team since it began...neither were there due to other callings this summer...yet, people..a doctor and his wife, a nurse, social workers, builders, a judge and his daughter, teachers...and folks form so many walks of life came alongside to make this RSR camp.

The leading Native elder took me for a walk around the area defining how the community wanted to set this place aside as a drug and alcohol free safe zone for women and children and used a word I have not used since Anthropology class as CIU. "Symbiotic"...then proceeded to define it as us working together to see this dream become reality...this man is a pre-Believer. They will finish the lumber from their bandsaw mill, help us dig a ditch for waterline to the camp...we had to pack water daily for dishes and drinking...we bathed in the river and a natural hotspring near by. After nearly 3 decades among the Sta'atl'imx...could this be the beginning of our dreams shaping before our very lives?

I could write long, but it is late, we have to leave early tomorrow for 10 days in Alberta. The photos are glimpses of change...of successors stepping into our shoes. Psalm 103 echoes my heart as I reflect on this RSR 2009 camp. Temera is teaching a young girl how to aim a bow...she is also leaning into joining NAIM toward taking the reins of First Nations Partnership within the next few years.

The blackberries are ripening under an August sun...so are the souls of First Nations people.

We remain grateful to the Nags Head family for covering this work so faithfully all these years.

Operation Backpack Tonight!

Operation Backpack happens again tonight at NHC!  On Tuesday we helped 69 children with their school supplies!!!  We are excited about God using NHC to share His love with the community in a practical way.  

If you are serving tonight on the Operation Backpack team please use the office door entrance on the back side of the building.  There will be folks lined up and waiting at the front doors which we won't unlock until 6pm.

Pray for the children and the families who will be receiving supplies.  A huge thanks for everyone serving on the team!

Operation Backpack - School Supplies for Dare County

Operation Backpack offers free school supplies for Elementary School children in Dare County, NC.

Distribution will take place at Nags Head Church (MP 13, just south of Jockey's Ridge) on:

Wednesday, August 12 from 6 - 8pm
Friday August 14 from 6 - 8pm
Saturday, August 15 from 8:30am - Noon

Supply lists and supplies for 1st through 5th grade for KHES, FFES, NHES and MES will be provided. Supplies are limited.

Call 441-7548 for more information about distribution, or to inquire about making a donation.

School Supplies Still Needed

The Operation Backpack set up team had a great time together setting up this evening.  

In the set up we noticed that we still need some supplies.  The following is what we need in order of most need:

Backpacks

Over sized T-shirts for Art

Clorox Wipes or Lysol Wipes

Zip style plastic bags - all sizes

3 Ring Zippered Binders

Pencil Pouches or Boxes

Pump bottles of antibacterial hand soap

Bottles of no water antibacterial sanitizer

Black ballpoint pens

Boxes of thin washable  markers

If you bring supplies tomorrow please don't place them on the distribution tables because they need to be inventoried.  Please pray for the children and families that will be helped at Operation Backpack and pray for our team as they reach out to the community.

Kids' Zone Construction help Thursday!

Thursday we will need some help upstairs in the Kids' Zone. If you can give of your time to do some sanding, light construction, clean up, etc. please call Tom Lee 261-7913.

We are closing in and need to get the sheetrock wrapped up ASAP so we can paint, install the ceiling, carpet, and move in. We are getting close!!

Operation Backpack Update

The Outer Banks community is really getting involved in NHC's Operation Back Pack this year! Thanks to OBXtreme Magic for helping us serve our community!

Going regional?

I've heard the phrase "regional church". Typically it's a larger church that draws a mojority of its members/attenders from 20 minutes (or more) away. It's vision is larger than to simply reach its immediate neighborhood.

Are we a regional church? I'm not saying we are, but today's Discovering NHC class had this dynamic that caught my attention: Of the ten in the class 3 were from Tyrell Co. (Columbia); 1 was from Hyde Co. and 1 from Currituck Co. That means that half the class were from counties other than Dare.

Regularly we have attenders and partners driving in each week from those locales as well as Rodanthe, Chesapeake and Elizabeth City. Every week.

What compels people to drive an hour or more to come to church? (I have some ideas since my family used to drive from the Outer Banks to VA Beach every Sunday for church with 3 small kids.) And what does this dynamic say to us about our vision for the future? Where do connection groups come into play? What about establishing new churches? Is our "community" actually larger than we think?

Backpack Sunday is Here!

Just like last year, we're giving prizes away to the coolest back packs during Backpack Sunday this Sunday in celebration of Operation Backpack! Operation Backpack, a Nags Head Church outreach event, takes place next week on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

This weekend is Tax Free in North Carolina and Virginia on all school supplies. Purchase a new backpack, empty or full of new school supplies, wear it to church on Sunday to donate to Operation Backpack, and win a sweet prize if it's the coolest back pack around. Prizes will be awarded to one adult and one child in each worship gathering...remember, you've got to be wearing your backpacks! Last year's winners included a grown man wearing a Hannah Montana back pack...

And, if your on Facebook, consider joining the Operation Backpack Group to help spread the word!

The Coming Swell - August 6

Kids Zone Update
The last little bit of framing is being finished this week, along with taping and finishing the dry wall. We'll need volunteers for clean up and sanding in the coming days before we can begin painting. If you haven't participated yet, now's the time! This week the flooring has been measured; a couple doors have been ordered, the dry wall has been hung.

Discovering NHC
Sunday's class is big, but there is still room to get in. DNHC is the introduction class to the church, explaining our beliefs, purposes, vision, strategies for doing God's work and basically answering questions about the church. If you're already a partner you can also take the class as a refresher, which is a great idea. If you want to get in, email Rick@nagsheadchurch.org.

Communion this Sunday
We'll be celebrating the Lord's Supper Sunday morning in both gatherings. Rick and Matt will be talking about our personal holiness in the series "Holier Than Thou?" and tying it into communion. (And if Mike calls and asks for your help, please say "Yes!".)

Sunday Parking
If you've arrived late to church the past few weeks you may have had to park down the street. We want to be good neighbors, so please be sure your car is totally off the road; park only on the south side of the street and do not block anyone's driveway.

Heart Troubles

This week there are three of us who have had heart related tests and procedures. Thanks for your prayers for all three.

Cathy Overstreet underwent a series of tests at Albemarle Hospital and is now at home.

Terry Gray, Sr. had a procedure done and is looking now at bypass surgery soon. Updated in the comments.

Chris Jolly had one procedure done this morning and another one to follow today at Albemarle.

Moses Print For Sale

No, this isn't a repeat of the thread below...we have about 20 of the autographed Moses prints here at the church building and will be holding them for the next few weeks for anyone wanting one. They can be purchased with a cash or check donation, all of the proceeds going directly to the artist, Amber Elwood (checks can be made out to Amber Elwood).

These prints will ONLY be available during the work week and NOT be available on Sunday mornings, so please call the church office before coming by to purchase a print. Again, the remaining prints will only be available for a limited time.
