In March you heard that John is working to connect our student ministry with the faculty ministry of Campus Crusade. We believe that God works mightily through students to touch the lives of faculty, and through faculty to reach students. This was forwarded to me two weeks ago, and we thought you’d like a look at what we want to see duplicated across the country. (The Monday Ministry Minutes mentioned below is a weekly article our faculty ministry sends to Christian faculty around the country.)
I met with Dr. ______ today – he's a Professor of Accounting at Central Michigan University. He wanted to thank me, and have me thank you, for one of your Monday Ministry Minutes a number of years ago, encouraging professors to identify themselves as Christians at the start of each class. He's taught at CMU for a number of years, but he was challenged by your MMM, and decided he really needed to step out in faith to identify himself as a Christian more.
After a while, he decided he wanted to do more, so he added something for his graduating seniors. He teaches a senior level accounting class, and the students in the class have had him for several courses by that point. So the last day of their last class, he finishes early, and goes around the class asking each one, "Where will you be in 5 years?" Invariably someone wisecracks something like, "6 feet under." So he talks about, "Then what?" He rhetorically asks the class if they have an answer to the "Then what?" question.
Then he shares a couple of his personal experiences of people who died young – a sophomore in a car crash, his granddaughter who never recovered from heart surgery when she was 2 years old. "Do you mind if I tell you how I'd answer that question?" he asks, and then shares a brief testimony.
He offers everyone in the class a copy of Erwin Lutzer's book, "One Minute after you Die,” which he has brought to class that day. He buys them by the box! He says if anyone wants to talk with him personally about that, he will buy them lunch – and gets 6-8 students who take him up on that each year. He then closes saying, "My prayer is that if you don't have a good answer to the 'Then what?' question, you won't rest until you do."
He's had two students from last year's class call him, one around Thanksgiving, the other in January, each saying, "Thank you for what you said in class. That has been eating at me for the past 6 months, and I want you to know that I recently asked Christ to forgive me and come into my life, just like in the book you gave me. Thank you, I now have a confident answer to the question!"
He gets a few of these each year.
